Lower Back Pain or Sciatica That Just Won’t Go Away?

Lower Back Pain or Sciatica That Just Won’t Go Away?

February 21, 2017

Lower back pain and sciatica is the biggest problem that we treat here at Diamond Physical Therapy.  Have  lower back pain and sciatica and your treatment  isn’t helping?  Physical therapy, chiropractic, massage therapy, or using medications or even injections are not fixing it?  Then the cause of your pain may not have been properly identified. Like any problem if you don’t find the true cause then you can’t resolve the problem.

Maybe there’s an unidentified underlying problem to your lower back pain.

This is something that we find quite often with lower back pain and sciatica.  So what could the underlying problem be?  Often times it’s an issue with the sacroiliac joint, or SI joint. The SI joints are found on the back of each side of your pelvis.

This is a tricky problem because X-Rays or MRIs can’t tell you if the joint is working properly or not.   Anyone can have an SI joint issue.  SI joint problems are not limited to any particular age group.  Teenagers have this problem and my oldest SI joint patient is 95 years old.

SI joint symptoms mimic the symptoms of lower back problems. It can include pain, numbness or tingling in your lower back, hip, groin or down into your leg.  They feel same to you.  However a trained physical therapist can differentiate the difference between the two.

What does an SI joint Problem Act Like?

People with SI joint problems will often have trouble sitting, especially for long periods of time.  It is also painful changing positions, like getting in and out of chairs or bed, twisting or making awkward movements.

So you have lower back pain and sciatica and your treatment has not helped much.  There’s a good chance it’s the SI joint.  Physical therapists trained in assessing SI joint problems perform specific tests to identify if the SI joint is involved.  Once identified, like any problem, the resolution to that pain, numbness or tingling can be taken care of once and for all.

Maybe you think your pain is from a herniated disc,  arthritis,  stenosis or degenerative disc disease. You may be right but there is a not so friendly law of the universe that says. “You don’t always get to have just one thing wrong with you at a time.”

What’s the Secret to Handling it For Good?

I have treated herniated disc patients that got 80% better but then stopped improving.  Treating their SI joint did just that, resolved the last 20% of their complaints and they were finally back to their old selves again, living and doing all the things they wanted; Pain free.

Lower back pain and sciatica can be caused by a number of issues.  It’s essential that all the regular suspects are considered, herniated discs, arthritis, stenosis and degenerative disc disease but don’t let the sneaky SI joint fly under the radar and keep you from getting back to normal.
